Description
81 and 83 High Street is a commercial building designed by A G Sydney Mitchell, dated 1884, with later additions. It features three stories and three bays in a Baronial style, situated on a prominent corner. The building has a distinctive curved tripartite corner turret, with relief pilasters framing the windows and carved scrolls on the parapet that display the motto 'ditat servata fides', associated with the Commercial Bank of Scotland. The design includes double-height pedimented eaves that break the canted bay, a projecting stack, and a curved stair tower at the rear. The shopfront, added in the late 20th century, is made of timber and plate glass.
The exterior is constructed of coursed smooth red sandstone ashlar, with whin and sandstone rubble and smooth red sandstone margins on the sides and rear. A double band course is present at the first floor, and a moulded string course is found at the second floor. The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case, with a part-glazed timber panelled door leading to the stair and a plain 20th-century door at the rear. The roof is covered with small grey slates and fishscale slates on the turret, topped with a decorative metal urn finial, while a flat lead section is also included. A tall corniced rectangular ashlar stack protrudes from the second floor, with cast-iron gutters and downpipes integrated into the string courses. There is a wrought iron gate leading to the side pend.
Inside, there is an entrance corridor to the right with plain cast-iron balusters that lead to single apartments on each floor. The shop has late 20th-century fitted cladding, but the original plan form of the upper flatted accommodation has been retained.
