Description

Polam Hall is a villa dating from the second quarter of the 19th century, originally the residence of Jonathan Backhouse, a banker, and later a girls' school. The villa is constructed of pinkish brick with a stone eaves cornice and blocking course, a band to the first floor, and a plinth. It has a low-pitched slate roof with end and ridge stacks. The windows are recessed sash windows with glazing bars, featuring flat gauged brick arches and stone cills.

The front of the building, facing the road, is two stories high with three windows, notable for its large proportions. A stone central section contains a porch in antis with square columns. A later 19th-century square bay has been added to the right, and an early 20th-century stuccoed half-octagonal projection to the left. The four-bay left return is plain, with engraved stone panels below the ground floor windows. The rear elevation includes a top half-story, which is blank except for a small central window. A secondary entrance front has a door with a radial fanlight within a Tuscan doorcase with an open segmental pediment.

Various extensions were added to the north side of the building in the later 19th century.
