Description

The bridge over the River Skerne was built in 1881 and designed by engineer John Dunning, with construction by Pease and Fry. It features rock-faced ashlar, red brick, and cast iron materials. This single-span road bridge has a small round-arched cut-water on the side. The straight ashlar side walls are supported by four square ashlar piers with panel sides and pyramidal caps, although three of these are now missing. The bridge is adorned with cast iron balustrades that have an unusual lattice design, and below these are four iron panels inscribed with "ERECTED BY MESSERS PEASE & FRY : 1881 : JOHN DUNNING ENGINEER."
