Description

The Central School (East Block), formerly known as Darlington Technical College, was built in 1896 by G.G. Hoskins in an elaborate Perpendicular style. It features pinkish brick with terra-cotta dressings and consists of two storeys and a basement, with a total of 13 bays. The central bay forms the base of a projecting four-storey tower, which has a first-floor bay window supported by an entrance porch. The tower, porch ends, and the corners of the two-bay projections on each side are adorned with octagonal corner turrets. These projections are gabled and include attic windows. The high-pitched slate roofs are topped with ridge stacks. The sections between and beyond the three projections display a quatrefoil patterned frieze that rests on a corbel table. All windows are designed with Perpendicular tracery and segmental relieving arches. The entrance features a many-moulded Tudor arched design with a drip mould and leafy stops, along with a name plaque above.
