Description
The Technical College, built between 1903 and 1904 by Cheers and Smith, is a notable example of architecture from this period. It is constructed of red brick with terracotta dressings and features a slated roof. The building is two storeys high, with a basement and dormers, and showcases Jacobean motifs. The front of the college is almost symmetrical, featuring a central entrance with two arches that is heavily rusticated and flanked by gabled wings. A bold balustraded staircase leads up to the entrance.
The windows are mullioned and transomed, rising to Flemish gables, while the west elevation, which faces the Town Hall, is grander and includes three voluted gables. There is a central porch with a segmental pediment supported by elaborate terracotta brackets. The stairs to the entrance are flanked and screened by four piers, with the foremost piers carrying two shield-bearing terracotta gryphons. On the first floor, there are bay windows on either side, also mullioned and transomed, featuring finely moulded putty in the parapets, with pinnacles positioned between and on the gables.
