Description
The Central Park War Memorial is located in the south-east corner of Central Park in East Ham. Made of Portland stone, this elaborate cenotaph stands approximately 8 metres tall on a three-stepped base. The lower section of the monument is square, with each face featuring a curved head topped by a faceted pinnacle. Rising from the corners of the monument are four columns, which are connected at the top by round arches that have pronounced keystones. From the keystones on the north and south sides hang bronze wreaths. At the top, the monument is crowned with a stone dome that also has a faceted pinnacle.
Each side of the memorial displays a bronze plaque dedicated to the men of East Ham who lost their lives during the First World War, specifically honouring the men of the 32nd (S) East Ham Battalion The Royal Fusiliers and the 141st (East Ham) Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. The Roll of Honour, which lists a total of 1,824 names, is spread across the four sides of the memorial.
