Description
The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a Grade I listed building dating from the 12th century. It features a simple west tower, a nave, and an apsidal-ended chancel, with no clerestory present. The walls are made of coursed rubblestone, incorporating some flint, and the roofs are tiled. The tower, which is located at the west end, was built in the early 16th century. The roofs of the apse and chancel are lower than that of the nave, and there are two flat pilaster buttresses on the structure.
The apse has three round-headed single-light windows and is separated from the chancel by a round arch from the 12th century. The north wall of the chancel features a 12th-century round-arched window and an interlinked arch inside, though much of it is missing on the south side. There is a 3-light window dating from the 16th to 18th centuries on the south side. Notably, there is no arch between the nave and chancel. The south wall of the nave has a restored 12th-century doorway, along with two double-light windows with 'Y' tracery added in 1844-1845, and two similar windows on the north wall, which are round-headed lancets.
The low buttressed brick tower is divided into three stages and remains undivided externally, featuring a battlemented west porch with a 12th-century doorway. Inside, there are significant fittings, including a piscina from the 13th century, a 13th-century wall painting in the apse, a 17th-century font, and notable monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries.
