Description
The building is a former fire station, now serving as council offices, located at the corner of Nelson Street and High Street South in East Ham. It was constructed in 1913, as indicated by the date in the parapet of the tower, and designed by J E W Birch, the Borough Surveyor. This bold red brick structure features two and a half storeys with terracotta dressings and a slated roof. The front elevation has four bays, while the return elevation to the right has three bays. At the corner, there is a tapering slated cupola on the tower. The first floor is adorned with mullioned and transomed windows, and the ground floor has four rusticated segmental leaded openings. The second floor features pedimented gables, and the tower has a gabled parapet topped with obelisks. The building is listed for its group value with the nearby library and town hall.
