Description

The Carnegie Public Library, opened in March 1908, was designed by A H Campbell and serves as an extension to East Ham Town Hall. The building is constructed of red brick with yellow terracotta dressings and features Jacobean motifs. It is two storeys high, topped by a balustraded parapet and a green slated garret storey. The front of the library includes a central open pedimented porch supported by rusticated Ionic columns, with a gabled oriel above. There are two bays of mullioned and transomed windows on each side. At the south end, there is a battered tower with octagonal buttresses, a cupola, and an octagonal lantern. The design also includes an egg and dart cornice, cill bandcourses, and thin chamfered buttresses.
