Description

The Amington Centre, originally a school, is a community centre built between 1863 and 1864 by architect G.E. Street. It is constructed of brick and features a 20th-century tiled roof with cresting and brick valley stacks, showcasing a Vernacular Revival style. The building is single-storey and has a five-window range, with a small gabled projection at the right end. The base is made of weathered brick, and there is a sill course. The entrance includes a 20th-century hipped porch with glazed sides. Most windows project above the eaves and are topped with half-hipped gables; all but one are boarded. The window to the right of the entrance has a wooden mullioned frame with four lights, two transoms, and shouldered lintels. The projection features a segmental-headed window with a two-light transomed wooden frame. The ridge is adorned with two bell turrets: one is square with a tile-hung base and a pyramidal roof over open sides, while the other has a leaded fleche supported by two posts. The returns of the building have segmental-headed windows beneath pointed arches, with herringbone brick tympanae; the left return has a window over a lean-to outshut, and the right return has windows over pointed entrances. The rear has an attached parallel range with various entrances and windows, now boarded, and two stacks with diagonal shafts. The interior has an inserted 20th-century floor.
