Description

Yew Tree House, formerly known as the Priest's House, is a house located in Amington, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with 18th-century additions. The building features a timber frame, mostly covered with plaster, while the exposed framing on the gables includes later decorative quadrants, and there are brick extensions. It has a tiled roof with brick stacks. The layout consists of a three-unit lobby-entrance plan with a cross wing at the right end and an extension at the left end. The house is single storey with an attic and has a four-window range. The central entrance features a plank door, and the windows are fitted with 20th-century leaded casements of varying sizes. The first floor includes a gabled dormer on the left end, with other windows located in the gables. There is exposed square framing on the bay to the right of center, a jettied gable with decorative framing, and the cross wing displays an exposed tie beam and collar. The house has a large cross-axial stack and end stacks. The rear has a roof that extends over a passage and includes a gabled single-storey wing, with some windows featuring pegged frames and leaded glazing on the right end. The left return is constructed of 18th-century brick.

Inside, the house showcases exposed timber framing, stop-chamfered beams and joists, and large stone back-to-back fireplaces. There are two entrances with shaped heads, one being segmental-headed and the other with a Tudor head. The first floor contains a room with a plaster floor, a segmental-headed fireplace, and a cupboard with an H-hinge, which provides access to a priest hole. The exposed roof truss features a collar and queen struts with brick infill.
