Description

The fountain located in the south-east corner of the public garden dates from the mid-19th century. It features a shallow terra-cotta bowl adorned with guilloche moulding beneath a scalloped run and a lotus leaf pattern on the underside. The bowl is supported by a stem with acanthus leaf moulding, which rests on a carved octagonal stone base that appears more modern. The entire structure is set within a modern square pool with brick side walls. A plaque on the west side states: "This fountain was erected in 1858 at the top of Tubwell Row and later moved to Green Park. It was moved to the present site in 1970 as a gift from the North of England Newspapers to mark the centenary of the Northern Echo first published in Darlington on first January 1870."
