Description

The Old Town Hall, built in 1863-1864 by Alfred Waterhouse, is located adjacent to the Market Building at the south end of Horsemarket. This building features two storeys and an attic, with five windows. It is constructed from pale yellowish brick with stone dressings and diagonal brick eaves cornices. The roof is very high-pitched and slated, featuring end chimneys and tall, spiky dormers. The windows are mullioned and transomed. The central entrance is pointed arched and located below a canted bay projection, which has a tall, half-octagonal hipped roof and a cast iron ornamental balcony supported by heavy stone brackets, similar to those on the tower. The entire ground floor slightly projects under a pent roof. There is also a single-storey east extension that matches the style of the main building.
