Description
Pease's House, located at No 12A Horsemarket, is a building from the late 18th century or early 19th century, likely with a medieval core. The main front of the house faces a small square, while the back is accessed via an alley from Horsemarket. The irregularity of the three-storey, five-window front and some large random rubble stonework on the return suggest its historical origins. The house has a slated roof with a low pitch, featuring two ridge stacks and a modern imitation 17th-century stack at the right end.
The front has sash windows, many with bars, set in slightly recessed wood box frames. There are also later 19th-century Venetian windows and a canted bay on the ground floor. The entrance features a Victorian four-panel door within a late 18th-century surround made of rusticated alternating blocks, topped with a heavy triple keystone. The walls are either pebble-dashed or rendered. To the left, there is a section of 17th-century red brick wall with an elliptical arch that includes a key and impost blocks. A plaque in front notes that Edward Pease, known as the father of the railways, lived here. The rear elevation has sash windows with glazing bars in box frames and a six-panel door in a stone surround, complete with outer rusticated pilasters, a cornice, and a pediment.
