Description

Number 39 is a house that has been converted into a dentist's surgery and offices, located in Barnard Castle. It was built around 1825 and has undergone some alterations in the late 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared stone with an ashlar plinth and dressings, topped with a roof made of graduated thin stone slates, featuring stone ridges and chimneys.

The house is two storeys high and has a two-window range. There are steps on the right leading to a late 20th-century panelled door, which has a fan-shaped glazed top light and a plain overlight, all set in a plain stone surround. To the left, there is a canted stone bay with a renewed plate-glass window beneath a renewed fascia with a cornice. Above, there are 4-pane sash windows in plain stone surrounds, with the left window restored under a wide wedge stone lintel. The eaves have a gutter cornice, and the roof features end chimneys, with the left chimney on a plinth and both chimneys having top bands shared with adjacent houses.

The low forecourt retaining wall has chamfered stone coping, and the square entrance piers are adorned with trefoil-headed panels and pyramidal coping. The handrail has been renewed. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
