Description

No. 41 Galgate is a house that has been converted into a garage, built around 1825 with alterations made around 1930. The building features painted coursed squared stone with an ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings. It has a glass, cast, and wrought-iron canopy over the garage. The roof is covered with thin stone slates and has stone ridges and chimneys.

The structure is two storeys high and has a two-window range, with a return to King Street that has a three plus two-window range. There is a six-panel door with an overlight set in a doorcase featuring pilasters and an entablature on the right side. To the left, there is a shop window with a recessed door on the right. The 1930 glass canopy is supported by cast-iron columns and has a glass fascia displaying the painted sign: 'GALGATE SERVICE STATION'. The first floor has plain stone surrounds to the sashes, which include glazing bars. The eaves have a cornice, and the roof is hipped on the left side, featuring a chimney at the right end and three transverse ridge chimneys on the left return towards King Street.

The left return includes wide boarded vehicle doors, with the left door sliding and the right door having a small inset door, as well as sashes with glazing bars in plain stone surrounds. The interior has not been inspected. Additionally, there is a late 18th-century street name plate attached to the left return, made of ashlar with a moulded frame, inscribed with 'KING STREET' in good Roman lettering.
