Description
No. 4 and the incorporated castle wall are located on the east side of North Bailey in Durham and Framwellgate. The wall is medieval and constructed of coursed squared sandstone. The house consists of two sections, built in the 17th century and later. It features painted render and painted brick with painted ashlar dressings and a plinth. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has a brick chimney.
The building has three storeys and attics, with three windows. The first section on the left has a five-panelled door in an architrave, which is located under a three-paned overlight in the second bay. It has renewed sash windows to the left and on the first floor, while the low second floor features 8-paned horizontal sliding sashes with broad glazing bars. There is an inserted gabled bargeboarded half-dormer.
The second section on the right is made of painted brick and has cambered brick arches over a tripartite sash and a single sash on the ground floor. There is a tripartite sash on the first floor, all with projecting stone sills. The low second floor has an 8-pane horizontal sliding sash with broad glazing bars on the right, and an inserted half-dormer under a bargeboarded gable on the left. There is a second floor band and a first floor band on the right bay. The right end has a chimney.
The rear of the house, now incorporated, features a massive bracketed hood, and the interior includes an early 19th-century stair. The building also incorporates a wall and tower from the medieval period, which are graded for their historical significance.
