Description
No. 49 North Bailey is a pair of houses built in the early 19th century. They are constructed of Flemish bond brick with a painted ashlar plinth and dressings, and the roof is not visible. The building has three storeys and four bays with irregular window arrangements.
On the left side, there is a six-panel door set in a deep panelled reveal, framed by a Tuscan doorcase featuring a Greek fret pattern. To the right, there is a four-panel door in a simpler doorcase, both doors topped with patterned overlights. The windows have cambered or flat brick arches and include a variety of types; the first-floor windows are uniform sashes with glazing bars, while the top floor features a 16-pane sash on the left and a tripartite sash with glazing bars on the right, all with projecting stone sills.
The building is reported to have an early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with an open string and a moulded handrail supported by two turned balusters per tread.
