Description
Bishop Cosin's Almshouses is an almshouse founded in 1666, located on Palace Green, with the present building dating from 1837 for the University. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof in the Tudor style. The structure has two-storey outer bays and a one-storey, one-bay link.
There is a boarded door with elaborate wrought iron hinges set in a Tudor-arched surround to the right of the central bay, and a 2-light window to the left. The gabled end bays contain 3-light windows on the ground floor and 2-light windows on the first floor, with a floor string running along. Commemorative panels are located in the gable peak, although the one on the right is eroded. All windows are double-chamfered under label moulds and are stone-mullioned and transomed. The gable copings are roll-moulded and supported by deep block kneelers.
The almshouses are included for their landscape value.
