Description
No. 5 North Bailey is a house dating from around 1700, constructed of English garden wall bond brick, primarily in a 6 and 1 pattern, with an ashlar plinth and dressings. It features a Welsh slate roof and stands three storeys tall with three windows. The central door, added around 1900, is flanked by side panels and has arcaded overlights topped with a high shell hood. To the left, there is an inserted cambered brick arch above a renewed sash window, while the sash window on the right has a soldier-course lintel. The upper windows are adorned with flat brick arches or soldier-course lintels, and most have projecting stone sills, with several featuring glazing bars, some of which are broad and some have 16 panes. The building has two brick bands at floor level and end chimneys.
Inside, the main staircase is notable for its two slender vase-and-column balusters per tread, which support a ramped handrail. The newels are slim and rectangular, with a round newel at the bottom. There is a second staircase to the right that is similar but has thicker balusters.
