Description

This headstone, dating from 1777, commemorates Thomas Williamson and is located 5 metres south of the Church of St. Mary in Gainford Low Green. It is made of sandstone and features a shaped segmental head with a relief of an angel's head and wings. The inscription reads: "In Remembrance of THOMAS WILLIAMSON late of Summerhouse, who departed this life, Sept. the 9th 1777. Aged 65. My Sledge and Hammer lie declin'd My Bellows have quite lost their wind, My Fires extinct my forge decay'd My Vice is in the dust all laid My Coal is spent my Irons gone My nails are drove my Work is done My fire dryd Corps lie(sic) here at rest My Soul Smoke like Soars to be blest."
