Description
The Gainford War Memorial is a York stone structure located in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, which is a Grade I listed building. It is situated near other listed buildings, including 27 and 28 Low Green, both of which are Grade II. The memorial is designed in the style of a tall cross reminiscent of the early medieval period.
The front face of the cross head and the upper part of the cross shaft feature intricate interlace patterns that are carved in low relief. Below the lower panel of interlace, there is a principal dedicatory inscription that reads: "THESE MEN OF/ GAINFORD PARISH/ LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918." This lettering is raised and set within a rectangular panel. The names of those commemorated are listed below the inscription, organized by service, and are incised into the stone. At the base of the memorial cross, a small stone carries the dedication for the Second World War, which reads "1939 – 1945/ (6 NAMES)."
The cross is positioned on a low rectangular step and is surrounded by an octagonal kerb that outlines a flower-bed.
