Description

The Village Cross is a structure that likely dates back to the medieval period, with a base that supports a cross erected in 1897. The cross was made by Isaac Charge and Son of Gainford. The base is a worn block measuring about 1.5 meters square, set upon a late 19th-century double stepped plinth. The cross features a slightly battered shaft and a Saxon-type head. On the west face of the shaft, there is an inscription that reads: "IN THANKFUL COMMEMORATION OF THE SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ACCESSION OF QUEEN VICTORIA ON JUNE 20TH 1897. THIS CROSS WAS RE-ERECTED AND TREES PLANTED ON THE GREEN BY THE INHABITANTS OF GAINFORD."
