Description

This is a milepost located 15 metres north of Grains o' th' Beck Bridge, dating from the late 19th century. It is made of cast iron and painted white. The milepost has a small triangular shape with a sloping top and a semicircular back plate. On the northwest face, it features raised black sans-serif letters stating "BROUGH 7 MILES," while the southwest face indicates "MIDDLETON 7 1/4 MILES." The back plate originally had similar lettering reading "NORTH RIDING OF YORKSHIRE," but this has been painted over in white since the milepost is now within County Durham. This milepost is included for its group value.
