Description

This milestone, located east of the junction with Victoria Road in Barnard Castle, dates from the late 18th century and was erected for the Durham-Bowes Turnpike Trust. It is made of painted sandstone ashlar and has a square-plan tapered shape, standing approximately 0.5 meters high with a rounded top. The milestone is set diagonally to the road and is partly obscured by a later field wall. The inscriptions "BOWES 5" and "DURHAM 24" are carved on the sides facing the road and are painted black.
