Description
This milestone, located approximately 70 metres north-west of the Post Office at Stainton Grove, dates from the late 18th century. It is made of painted ashlar and has a square-section block that stands about 0.5 metres high, topped with a domed pyramidal shape. The milestone is set diagonally to the road. On the west face, it features the inscription "Durham 23" painted and incised, while the east face displays "Bowes 6" in larger letters. Similar inscriptions are also incised on the rear faces, with the "Durham" inscription again in larger letters.
