Description

This milestone, located approximately 40 metres south of the Sun Inn, dates from the late 18th century. It is made of painted ashlar and has a square-section block that stands about 0.5 metres high, topped with a domed pyramidal shape and set diagonally to the road. The west face displays "DURHAM 16," while the east face shows "BOWES 13," both oriented towards the road. The rear faces feature the inscriptions "Durham 16 Miles" and "Bowes 13 Miles" in larger irregular letters, all of which are incised and painted.
