Description

This milestone, located on the east side of Bridgegate in Barnard Castle, dates from the late 18th century and was created for the Durham-Bowes Turnpike Trust. It is made of painted sandstone ashlar and has a square-plan tapered design, standing approximately 0.5 metres high with a rounded top. The stone is set diagonally to the road, with the inscriptions "BOWES 4 DURHAM 25" painted on the side facing the road.
