Description
Barnard Castle Bridge is a road bridge over the River Tees, built in 1569 and repaired in 1771. It is constructed from squared stone and features two segmental-pointed triple-stepped arches, with the eastern arch being slightly taller. Each arch is supported by five square ribs, and there are triangular cutwaters between the arches that rise to form pedestrian refuges. The bridge has later squinch arches that support a 20th-century widening of the approach road to the southeast and northwest. The 18th-century parapets have slightly-arched coping and are stepped out from the wall faces above the arches. On the inner face of the parapet in the southern refuge, there are adjacent blocks with incised initials "C.D." and a brass-inset "Y," marking the boundary between Durham and North Riding.
