Description

The former mill located at the rear of Number 22 Bridgegate in Barnard Castle is a building from the mid to late 18th century. Originally known as Banner's Mill, it has served various purposes over the years, including a carpet mill, an animal food factory, and an ice factory. It is now used as a workshop and storage space. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar or roughly tooled quoins and dressings, some featuring herringbone tooling, and has a roof made of stone slates.

This three-storey structure has a ten-window range, along with a two-storey, five-window range, and a two-storey, two-window range, with a basement at the left end. It extends from the rear of house Number 22 to the edge of the river, with the lower part attached to the house. The three-storey range features a renewed door in the seventh bay beneath a 20th-century pent porch, and small windows with flat stone sills and lintels. The two-storey continuation on higher ground shares the same roof and has a boarded door in the fourth bay, along with small windows that have flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The lower right section of the building has an extruded porch at the angle with Number 22 and taller windows framed in stone. All windows have been fitted with renewed glazing. The roof includes truncated chimneys at the left end and between the third and fourth bays. The left side facing the river has a boarded door under a flat stone lintel at the basement level. The building underwent restoration around 1972.
