Description

Mill Number Two in New Lanark dates from around 1789, with a link to Mill Number 1 built between 1800 and 1817. The main building was extended to the north in 1884-1885. It is a five-storey and basement structure, exposed to the south by the sloping ground, featuring a rectangular plan with 21 bays and a flat roof. The link to Mill Number 1 has a gabled curved shape, consisting of three bays to the north and eight to the south. The northern elevation is made of brick, while the other sides are constructed from rubble with droved and stugged dressings. The northern elevation also has a dentilled eaves cornice and a parapet.

The building has a regular arrangement of windows, with segmental-arched windows on the north side that have projecting cills, and ashlar margins on the south side. The central bay of the north elevation features loading doors, which are now boarded up, at each floor above ground level, with the top-floor opening now glazed around the hoist. There are two semi-circular openings with timber-boarded doors connecting to Mill Number 1. A brick link to Mill Number 3 is stepped back at the far left. The south elevation, facing the river, includes a semi-circular wheel arch that now has a two-leaf timber-boarded door.

The windows on the north elevation predominantly have nine panes, while those on the south have six panes, all in timber frames with inward-tilting hoppers. The link block to Mill Number 1 is covered with grey slates.

Inside, the building features brick jack-arch construction supported by inverted T-section beams and cast-iron columns, along with tiled floors.
