Description
Broomielaw Farmhouse, along with its attached outbuildings and pump, is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, with an early 19th-century extension and a pump dated 1822. The main house is constructed from coursed squared sandstone, while the extension is made of sandstone rubble. It features a plinth, quoins, and ashlar dressings, with stone-flagged roofs that have gable copings and chimneys made of ashlar and brick. The pump is made of painted metal encased in wood.
The main farmhouse is three storeys high with two wide bays, and the left extension is two storeys with two bays, nearly matching the height of the main building. The main house has 20-pane sash windows on the first two floors and 6-pane fixed lights on the second floor, all set in almost square plain stone rebated surrounds, with holes for five vertical bars. The left extension features pecked flat stone lintels above a renewed glazed door and a three-pane overlight to the right, along with projecting stone sills for the sashes, which have fine glazing bars.
The main roof has moulded kneelers and banded end chimneys on plinths, with the left chimney showing some brick patching. The lower second-build roof has a left end banded ashlar chimney. At the rear, there is a full-width two-storey outshut to the earlier house, which has blocked flat-mullioned windows, wide horizontal sliding sashes on the ground floor, and late 19th-century sashes above. The 19th-century extension includes a full-width one-storey outshut and a gabled porch with a door in the inner return.
The pump, dated 1822, features a star and the initials J.B., likely representing John Bowes, the owner of the farm and Streatlam Estate, positioned against the gable of the porch. Additionally, there is a right pent set-back one-storey, one-bay addition with a boarded door and a small window, as well as a further smaller blank set-back pent earth-closet addition.
