Description
A pair of houses, later used as the master’s house for the railway goods station, and subsequently a butcher’s shop and house, now a separate shop and house. The property’s deeds indicate it was sold as two houses in 1734. The building dates to the late 18th century, with alterations around 1856 for the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company and later alterations in the late 19th century. The exterior is rendered with painted ashlar dressings, and a roof of graduated stone slates with stone ridge details and chimneys. The two-storey, two-window-range façade features a shop front on the left with a half-glazed panelled door and a plate-glass window, beneath a renewed corniced fascia. A renewed central door is set in a low, plain stone surround. The ground floor has a 4-pane sash window with a projecting stone sill, and matching first-floor sashes also have projecting stone sills to the eaves, which are at lintel level. The eaves were likely raised from a mid-dormer level, and the division between the two houses is marked by a change of line in the render at the right-hand side. A railway company plaque is positioned over the door, featuring a painted cast-iron low relief shield with the inscription ‘F 11’ and ‘S & DR’ in the flanking lower corners. The interior was not inspected. The railway goods station, which served the Stockton and Darlington Railway and was located on Montalbo Road to the rear of the property, is noted for its group value.
