Description

No. 9 is an 18th-century house and shop, located on the north side of Front Street, Staindrop. The building has a late 19th-century shop element. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a concrete-tiled roof and stone gable coping. The house is two storeys high and has four bays. A double-panelled door, with a two-pane fanlight in a round-headed surround featuring voussoirs, is centrally positioned in the fourth bay, accessed by steps. A projecting shop occupies the first two bays, with slender pilasters, shouldered lights, and a bracketed cornice. Late 19th-century sash windows are present under voussoirs in the third bay and on the first floor. The roof features a right gable coping on a moulded kneeler, and corniced ridge chimneys are located centrally and at the right end.

Chamfered dwarf walls enclose the area in front of the building, and spear-headed railings flank the path leading to the front door.
