Description
14 Church Street is a three-storey building from the 18th century, part of a group that includes Nos. 12-16. The front is finished in painted stucco, and the roof is not visible from the street. The facade features a cornice above each floor and six windows across the front. The four central window bays are slightly set back, with round-headed and recessed windows on the first floor. The other windows have moulded architraves, with the second-floor windows being slightly smaller. The first-floor windows are 6 over 6 pane sashes, while the second-floor windows are 3 over 3.
The ground floor includes shop windows designed as a unit, although No. 12 has a contemporary shop window with glazing bars, while the others feature modern shop windows. There is also a carriage entrance to the former Swan Hotel on Priory Street. The windows are separated by Tuscan pilasters that support a continuous fascia or cornice. No. 12 has a small paned 6 x 5 shop window with a part-glazed door and overlight to the left, followed by a throughway and then two late 20th-century shops with 2-pane windows and doors to the right. The first-floor windows have bracketed heads at either end and an arcaded treatment between them, with a cill band above the smaller windows and a dentil cornice above the second floor.
No. 16 has a blind side elevation facing Bell Lane. The interior was not available for resurvey, except for the shop premises, which feature a plain late 20th-century shopfront.
