Description
No. 12 Church Street is part of a row of buildings, Nos. 12-16, which date from the 18th century. The front is finished in painted stucco, and the roof is not visible from the street. The building stands three storeys high, featuring a cornice above each floor and a total of six windows across the front. The four central window bays are slightly set back, with the first-floor windows being round-headed and recessed. The other windows have moulded architraves, with the second-floor windows being slightly smaller. The first-floor windows are 6 over 6 pane sashes, while the second floor has 3 over 3 panes.
The ground floor has shop windows designed as a unit, although No. 12 features a contemporary shop window with glazing bars, while the other shops have modern windows. The ground floor also includes a carriage entrance that leads to the former Swan Hotel on Priory Street. The windows are separated by Tuscan pilasters that support a continuous fascia or cornice. No. 12 has a small paned 6 x 5 shop window with a part glazed door and overlight to the left, followed by a throughway, and then two late 20th-century shops with 2-pane windows and doors to the right. The first-floor windows have bracketed heads at either end and an arcaded treatment in between, with a cill band above the smaller windows on the second floor and a dentil cornice above the third floor.
No. 16 features a blind side elevation facing Bell Lane and has a small paned 6 x 5 window with a part glazed door to the left. The rear elevation is adjacent to the former White Swan Inn, now known as White Swan Court. Although the interior was not available for resurvey, it is reported to retain traditional shop fittings.
