Description

16 Church Street is a three-storey building dating from the 18th century, part of a row that includes Nos. 12-16. The front is finished in painted stucco, with a roof that is not visible from the street. The façade features a cornice above each floor and a total of six windows. The four central window bays are slightly set back, with the first-floor windows being round-headed and recessed. The other windows have moulded architraves, with the second-floor windows being slightly smaller. The first-floor windows are 6 over 6 pane sashes, while those above are 3 over 3.

The ground floor has shop windows designed as a unit, although No. 12 features a contemporary shop window with glazing bars, while the others have modern shop windows. The ground floor also includes a carriage entrance to the former Swan Hotel on Priory Street. The windows are separated by Tuscan pilasters that support a continuous fascia and cornice. No. 12 has a small paned 6 x 5 shop window with a part-glazed door and overlight to the left, followed by a throughway, then two late 20th-century shops with 2-pane windows and doors to the right. The first-floor windows have bracketed heads at either end, with an arcaded treatment between them, and a cill band above the smaller windows. There is a dentil cornice above the second floor.

No. 16 has a blind side elevation facing Bell Lane. The rear elevation has been altered where it adjoins the new buildings of White Swan Court. The interior was not available for inspection during the resurvey, except for the shop premises.
