Description
Nos. 1–6 Priory Street form a convex terrace of three-storey, double-depth houses, some originally with shops on the ground floor. The buildings date from the 18th century and are faced in stucco, with Welsh slate roofs hidden behind parapets. There are nineteen windows on the first floor, arranged in a pattern of 5:3:3:3:5. The ground floor features four shopfronts (Nos. 1–4), the arched entrance to White Swan Court, and tripartite 6 over 6 pane sash windows in Nos. 5 and 6. The shopfronts are framed by fluted strip pilasters, while Nos. 3 and the White Swan Court entrance feature plain Doric pilasters, and Nos. 5 and 6 have single pilasters at the ends and three paired pilasters framing the windows. The White Swan Court entrance has a fine pair of original double-panelled doors. The houses have six-panel doors with arched heads, impost blocks, and radiating fanlights. A continuous cornice at ground floor level doubles as a cill band for the first-floor windows, which are large 6 over 9 pane sashes, with blind boxes on the No. 4 windows. Nos. 3 and the White Swan Court entrance have giant pilasters extending through the first and second floors, topped with Composite capitals. A cill band runs above the second-floor windows, which are all 3 over 3 pane sashes. A cornice and parapet band top the building. No. 4 has an additional attic floor with a pediment and a Diocletian lunette window, while the others each have one small, flat-topped dormer visible behind the parapet. The rear elevations of Nos. 1–3 were not visible. White Swan Court abuts No. 4, and its entrance is flat-topped and framed by plain pilasters. The first floor of White Swan Court has a 4-light window with 4 panes, set in an arched recess, above which is a tripartite sash. Nos. 5 and 6 contain various plain sash windows. The interior was not inspected during the most recent survey.
