Description

The Nelson Museum, Local History Centre, and Monmouthshire County Council Area Office is a building that features a street façade made of Bath stone ashlar, while the rest is constructed from modern materials, with Welsh slate roofs visible. The building exhibits an austere Greek Revival style on the street front, contrasting with the modern design of the rear, which dates from the 1960s. It is well positioned on a concave curve.

Originally, the building was partly two storeys high, featuring a ground floor Doric arcade and a central block with a pediment and cupola. However, following a fire, it has been reduced to a single storey. The original arcade, which consists of eleven bays, has been preserved, with the center and ends being wider and slightly projecting as entrances, arranged in the sequence E : W : W : W : W : E : W : W : W : W : E. The façade includes round-headed recessed windows separated by pilasters, while the entrances are framed by Doric columns in-antis and arched doorways, all fitted with modern glazed screens. A continuous entablature and parapet run along the top, with shallow hipped roofs over the entrance bays.

The rear of the building has been completely reconstructed, featuring a range of steel-framed oriel windows that overlook the river. The interior was entirely redone in 1968-1969, resulting in a fully modern finish.
