Description
Nos. 1 and 3 Church Street are a pair of three-storey buildings, likely dating from the 18th century. They feature a rendered front that is lined out to resemble ashlar, probably over brick, with a Welsh slate roof behind a parapet and red brick chimney stacks. The buildings are situated on a narrow plot that faces the street, suggesting they were developed from an early burgage plot. Each building has a single bay front, with shops on the ground floor.
The first floor includes a canted oriel window with plate glass sashes, and there is a plat band at the second floor level. Above this, there is a 4 over 4 pane sash window, a cornice band, and a parapet. The roof is hipped at the front, featuring a chimney stack on the ridge and a larger stack at the rear.
The right side of the building has a long return elevation with a mix of doors and windows, including one 9 over 9 pane sash on the ground floor and one 4 over 4 pane sash on the first floor, although most of the windows are 20th-century replacements. The rear elevation has not been seen. The interior was not available for inspection during the resurvey, except for the shop premises.
