Description

Harold Road Junior School is a building constructed from yellow brick with Bath limestone dressings on a grey stone plinth, topped with a red tiled roof featuring tiled cresting. It has yellow brick chimneys and cast-iron rainwater goods. The school is designed in a Tudor style with some Jacobean details and is generally a single-storey structure, except for the later Science Block at the rear, which is two-storeys high. The windows feature horned small pane sash glazing set in mullion-and-transom configurations.

The long front of the building faces north towards the street. From the left, there is a projecting gabled block with Bath limestone banding and a 5-light window. This is followed by two set-back 2-light windows with gablets above, then another gabled block with a 4-light window that connects to a block with a single-light window and two 2-light windows, leading to a further gabled block that includes a gabled porch with an arched doorway. The gabled block features a 5-light window. The west return has five windows and shallow buttresses.

The east return includes an arched doorway situated between two gablets. The rear of the building has a similar design, featuring a later addition that is a two-storey, 6-window block with a hipped tiled roof, likely built during the inter-war period, as it does not appear in early 20th-century photographs. The rear elevation was not inspected.

While the interior was not inspected during the resurvey, it is known to retain much of its original character, including classrooms with part-glazed partitions flanking internal corridors, fine woodwork fittings, and open timber roofs.
