Description

Post Office and Forge Cottage is a pair of two-storey estate houses constructed from snecked sandstone, featuring timber-framed porches and red tiled roofs. They replicate the general design of Fairoaks and Pen-y-cwm but are arranged as a unified and symmetrical range. Each end has a projecting gabled bay, with a pair of smaller gables in the center, and there is a small side wing with a porch at the west end.

At the junction of each outer bay, there is a gabled timber-framed porch with a slate roof, which includes a corbelled semicircular outer arch and open square-panelled timber detail on the gable. The porches have round-arched openings on the sides, an inner side bench, and a part-glazed door. Above each porch, tucked under the eaves, is a very shallow two-light mullioned window. Each outer gabled bay features a canted bay window with wooden transomed glazing and a hipped tiled roof, along with a transomed three-light window in the inner bay and a cross-window on the first floor above these, with the center windows rising into dormer gables.

Between the upper and lower windows of the gabled outer bay, there is a square plaque carved with a quatrefoil that contains Lord Llangattock's monogram "Ll" and the date 1893. The eaves and gables oversail, with plain bargeboarding and finials on the gables. A chimney stack with six tall octagonal chimney pots is located at the center of the roof. Attached to the west return wall of the left house is a short single-storey side wing, which features a lower but wider porch in the same style as the others, protecting a doorway and a wall letterbox.
