Description
Garden View is a long, low building dating to the early 20th century, constructed in a convincing East Anglian style with close-studded timberwork, reflecting the work of Sir Aston Webb for the Rolls estate at Hendre. The building has a red brick plinth extending up to window sill level, with close-studded timberwork above, and graduated slate roofs with red brick chimneys. The plan is L-shaped, with the main range running north-south, and gabled crosswings at each end. A service wing is attached to the rear of the north crosswing. The building is single-storeyed, except for the south crosswing, which is one-and-a-half storeys high. The west elevation, which overlooks the gardens of The Hendre, features three two-light casement windows in the main range, along with two ridge chimneys. Each wing has a jettied gable with a cambered bressummer beam and a canted four-light bay window beneath. The gable of the north wing has uninterrupted studwork, while the south wing’s higher gable features three tiers of studwork and a three-light casement between the rails. Both gables have bargeboards and slightly swept eaves, and all the windows have leaded glazing. The north side of the north wing incorporates the main entrance, consisting of a shallow lean-to porch towards the rear; the front is open, and the side is weather-boarded between brick piers, with a three-light casement in the upper half, protecting a board door with a circular glazed panel. A single three-light casement window is also present on this side, partially within the porch. At the rear of this wing, a smaller roof, with eaves at the same level, forms a bridge to a detached former wash-house, leaving a wide portal to the back garden. A simple post and rail fence with a central gate is situated in the middle of this portal. The north side of the wash-house has a three-light window, the south side has a short projection with a part-glazed door flanked by windows and a hipped, swept roof, and a chimney stack to the west side of the wash-house breaks through the main roof ridge. The rear of the main range is now covered by a modern lean-to with a corrugated sheet roof. Inside the north wing is a sitting room featuring an inglenook fireplace.
