Description
Croesvaen is a substantial house built in the Arts-and-Crafts Tudor style. It dates from the early 20th century and is constructed of rock-faced rubble stone with red tile roofs and stone chimneys. The house has an irregular plan, comprising a main front range with coupled gabled wings to the rear, and a single-storey service wing projecting from the north-west angle.
The south facade is a strongly articulated four-bay composition. The first bay is a slightly projecting tower, and the fourth a gabled wing that steps back from the main line of the facade. A large round-headed arch provides access to a recessed porch, which is partially enclosed by a short flight of steps leading to a doorway on the right-hand side of the inner wall. To the left of the arch is a three-light mullioned window (with some replacement stonework), and at first-floor level are mullioned windows of three, two, and three lights, the last of which is larger and closer to the eaves. The tower has a two-light window on the ground floor, a single-light window above, and a parapet with raised corners and ball finials (one of which is missing). The gabled wing has a low five-light window on the ground floor, a stepped mullioned window above, and decorative gable coping with ball finials. A single chimney rises from the ridge at the junction with this wing; three others are to the rear.
The east side features a large rectangular bay window with mullions and transoms to the front bay, and a smaller canted bay window to the rear bay, with a doorway between them. Two small dormer gables are situated above. The west side, which is more functional in appearance, includes a doorway at the junction of the front range and the service wing. Above this is a rectangular projection set back in the angle behind the main range, featuring a five-light mullioned window and a convex lead-clad roof with a finial. The single-storey service wing has parapets that conceal the roof and includes two mullion-and-transom windows.
The building was not inspected.
