Description
North Lodge is a former gate lodge, likely originally designed to resemble Monmouth Lodge at Rockfield, which dates to 1896. It has been altered, possibly with additions, since its original construction. The lodge is built of random rubble walls, with the side and rear surfaces rendered; it has red tile roofs with gable parapets and decorative fleur-de-lis ridge tiles. The building has an irregular plan, consisting of a short main range running parallel to the road, a rear wing set back at a right angle to the west end of the main range, a porch-tower in the southern angle created between them, and a short wing on the south side of the porch-tower. It is one-and-a-half and two storeys high, built in a free Scottish Baronial style. The lodge's striking composition was particularly noticeable to visitors arriving from the Monmouth direction, as they left the main road. The eastern gable end of the main range is prominent, with the porch-tower set back on its southern side. This gable wall features an unusual single-storey semi-circular "turret" at ground floor level, with a steep semi-conical tiled roof and a chamfered one-light window on each of its four sides; two narrow chamfered one-light attic windows are located near the apex, and a steep crow-stepped parapet is topped with a ball finial. The two-storeyed porch-tower to the left has steps leading up to a round-headed arch containing a square-headed doorway (with a replaced door) and a dripband above a small chamfered one-light window. It features a coped parapet and a short fishscale-tiled pyramidal spire surmounted by a tall weather vane finial. A short, single-storey wing, rendered and painted white, is attached to the left side of the lodge. The road-facing side is rendered and has no openings except for one window in each section. The interior of the lodge was not inspected at the time of re-survey.
