Description
Oak House East and West are a pair of large, semi-detached houses built in the late 19th century in a neo-vernacular Jacobethan style. They are constructed from roughly-faced stone rubble with some decorative half-timbering and covered with blue slate roofs. The houses have a symmetrical design to their south-facing facade, mirroring each other and framed by slightly projecting gabled sections at each end. The central section of the upper floor features close-studded timber framing arranged in two tiers of unequal height, incorporating wavy braces at each end of the lower tier. This section rises into a pair of half-dormers, which feature curved and king struts, and overhanging, bargeboarded eaves. Each end of the facade has a Tudor-arched doorway sheltered by a lead-covered canopy supported by two posts. The ground floor of the main section has two four-light stone mullioned windows, while the first floor has two three-light wooden mullioned windows that extend slightly into the dormers. The gabled outer bays each have a five-light mullioned window on the ground floor, a three-light window on the first floor, and gable coping topped with a ball finial. A large chimney stack runs along the centre of the ridge, and smaller chimney stacks project slightly from each end. The rear of the properties has not been inspected.
