Description

The garden pavilion, raised terrace, and screen wall are part of a former formal garden located to the east and south of The Hendre. The terrace is approximately 100 meters long and runs nearly north-south. The pavilion is integrated into the screen wall on the west side of the north end, while the formal garden, which is square in shape, is situated on the west side of the south end. Both the pavilion and screen wall are constructed from red brick with sandstone dressings, and the pavilion features a tiled roof. The terrace is made of roughly-coursed rubble with artificial stone parapets.

The pavilion is square and faces south, showcasing stone banding at the corners, a large round-headed archway with a banded surround, and an oversailing ogival roof topped with a shallow lantern and a scrollwork finial. There are unglazed windows on each side of the southeast corner at the rear. The screen walls, which are about half the height of the pavilion, extend on either side to banded terminal piers that have moulded stone caps with large ball finials.

The terrace, beginning at the eastern pier, is generally no more than 1 meter high and features a coped parapet with circular open-work. At the south end, there is a short west return that connects to the northeast corner of the formal garden, which is elevated on built-up ground and accessed by a flight of 8 steps that is approximately 3 meters wide. The terrace walling and parapet continue along the eastern side of the formal garden, which includes a semicircular bow towards the north end and a wide rectangular bay at the southeast corner. The southern side of the formal garden is bordered only by the parapet, part of which was missing at the time of this survey. The garden itself contains a pond with a fountain, and although the entire garden was grassed over during the survey, the outlines of geometrical rose beds were still clearly visible.
