Description
The former cider mill located south of Steps Farmhouse is a long and relatively low building primarily constructed of random rubble, with the west gable rebuilt in red brick and a roof covered in red pantile. Internal evidence indicates that the structure was originally timber-framed. It has a narrow rectangular layout, consisting of two main units and a short bay added at the eastern end.
On the north side, which faces the former farmyard, there is a wide segmental-headed doorway near the west end, featuring a wooden doorcase and a boarded door, accompanied by a small one-light window to its left. In the eastern half, there is a similar doorway with a slightly larger window to its left, and beyond a vertical joint, another doorway positioned at a higher level. The west gable wall, made of brick, includes a segmental-headed window at ground level and a loft doorway above it. The rear wall, facing the road, shows ragged joints on either side of the center, suggesting that there may have once been a wide doorway in this location. Flanking this area are small segmental-headed two-light casement windows, and at the left (west) end, there is a very small segmental-headed window, all featuring brick surrounds.
Inside, there is a timber-framed lateral partition wall in the eastern addition, indicating that the original building might have been entirely timber-framed. The building also contains an apple press.
