Description

Monmouth Lodge is a former gate lodge to The Hendre, built in a theatrically-eclectic style. The structure features walls made of random rubble and roofs covered with red tiles, complete with gable parapets and fleur-de-lis ridge tiles. It has an irregular plan that includes a short main range running parallel to the road, a rear crosswing, and a porch-tower located at the southern angle formed by these elements. The building stands one-and-a-half to two storeys tall and presents a striking appearance to visitors arriving from Monmouth as their carriages diverge from the public road.

The eastern gable-end of the main range, along with the set-back porch-tower on its southern side, creates a notable composition. The gable wall features an unusual single-storey semi-circular "turret" at ground floor level, topped with a steep semi-conical tiled roof. This turret includes a chamfered one-light window on each of its three cardinal sides, with a pair of narrow chamfered one-light attic windows flanking the apex. The turret is capped with a steep crow-stepped parapet that has a ball finial at the top.

The two-storey porch-tower to the left has steps leading up to a round-headed arch that contains a square-headed doorway, which bears the date 1896 in the tympanum. Above this doorway, there is a small chamfered one-light window at the first floor, along with a corbelled and embattlemented parapet. The tower is topped with a tall pyramidal flèche featuring triangular lucarnes and a finial.

Both the northern and southern gables of the rear wing match the front gable, and each of the front and rear ranges is equipped with a large chimney that has a corbelled cap. The design of Monmouth Lodge was almost exactly replicated for North Lodge in Hendre. This lodge forms a good group with its associated gateway.
