Description

Rockfield School is a single-storey school building constructed from red and brown sandstone rubble stone, with coursed stone at the front and mostly snecked stone at the rear. It features slate roofs and red brick chimney stacks.

The gable end facing the road has a distinctive squared bay window with a deep coved cornice and dressed stone voussoirs above a small-pane, three-light window. There is a slit ventilator above and a broken gable finial. On the south side wall, there is a gabled porch with simply moulded bargeboards, a pendant, and a finial. The porch has a four-centred arch entrance and blind 'slit' windows on the sides, along with a plaque that refers to the founding of a school here in 1845. Inside the porch, there is a square-headed inner doorway with a boarded door.

Balancing the porch on the north side is a gabled projection that has similar detailing but features a six-pane window instead of a doorway. Further back on each side, there are tall gabled windows with four-pane sashes and two-pane overlights. Overlapping the south side is a short, lower crosswing that includes a boarded door in the re-entrant angle and a four-pane sash in the south gable. Both gables have barge boarding similar to the porch. To the right of the porch, there is a broad brick side-wall chimney stack with offsets, and another similar chimney stack is located further back on the opposite side. Between this chimney and the gabled window, there is a square-headed doorway that likely related to a lean-to privy-house at the rear of the stack.

Inside, there is a rectangular hall featuring polygonal corbels supporting the purlined timber trusses, which are ceiled at collar level, along with half-glazed partitions.
